About
Calculations for Caregivers (basic level) provides an opportunity for nursing students, nurses, and family caregivers to refresh their number skills and gain confidence in safe, accurate medication administration for oral dosing of solid and liquid medications. Designed for those who do not identify as ‘math people,’ students work at their own pace through a gentle set of lessons that include interactive learning activities culminating in self-assessment quizzes with instant feedback. Successful completion of a comprehensive final test results in a certificate of completion. Medication math covered matches the content generally required in first year nursing studies (non-IV calculations). The course is composed of 5 groups of lessons. Most students have found they can complete the course within two weekends, however you have access to the entire course for 20 weeks. By engaging in this course, you have the opportunity to: Refresh basic arithmetic and calculation principles Develop and apply number sense to interpret math questions, estimate, calculate, and check solutions to dosing problems Interpret prescribing and drug label language for safe medication administration Identify a safe dose by calculating recommended dose ranges Demonstrate safe practice by estimating calculated result, applying a standard dosing formula, and self-checking actual calculated result Solve prescribed dosing calculations for oral administration of medications (solid and liquid), including weight-based dosing
